Student Employee and Employer of the Year 2011
The competition which is organised by NASES (National Association of Student Employment Services) recognises the outstanding contribution and achievements of students who effectively combine part-time work with their study commitments. Student employment services at universities across the country have been seeking nominations from employers who have recruited students through their services. The Job Shop at Bath Spa University, which helps students find local, ideally degree-related part-time work to fit around their studies, contacted local employers who have used the service this year for nominations. Students were also asked to nominate their employers who have been particularly supportive, for the category of Student Employer of the Year.
Juliet Mather Job Shop Coordinator at Bath Spa University commented: "This award recognises the importance of part-time work experience for the future employability of students, as well as the valuable contribution students can make to key local employers."

Emma Lilley BA (Hons) History 3rd Year
Congratulations to Emma Lilley who has worked at Priston Mill Hospitality for the last 2 years as a member of their 40 strong-team of BSU University Student Waiting Staff. Priston Mill is situated on the outskirts of Bath, making it one of the prime wedding locations in the South West.
Helen Davey the Events Manager nominated Emma because she is the student who they turn to at short notice to deputise for one of the 3 Event Managers whilst one of them is busy elsewhere. The role as waiting staff at Priston Mill can be demanding, looking after newlyweds and their guests, yet Emma can always be seen to smile and remain motivated through to the end of the night which is a great example to her peers.
Helen stated that “We are a small events management team and two out of the three of us are Bath Spa graduates. I started at Priston Mill whilst a student myself at Bath Spa University, and understand the pressures of having such a demanding part time job whilst studying. At Priston Mill our greatest asset is the people who work here. In many of the thank you messages we receive guests often name Emma personally in their feedback as making an excellent contribution. The job enables students to develop their communication skills for future employment after graduating. She will also continue to use the time management skills in her future plan when she intends to take a law conversion course.”
Emma won the South West Regional heat becoming the South West Regional Student Employee of the Year.

Becky Holden BA (Hons) Creative Writing 3rd Year
Becky has worked for the Employability Department for 2 years, assisting with any events taking place within employability such as careers fairs, as well as being one of the Student Job Shop Assistants and her final role was a the Supervisor of the telephone canvassers undertaking the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education Survey.
Rosy Williams, Employability Administrator, nominated Becky as she
“has excelled in many ways as an employee of the Employability dept. Most prominently though would be in her recent role as Supervisor of the DLHE survey. She managed a group of ten students ensuring that they focussed on achieving nightly targets; this involved checking completed surveys for accuracy and also being professional when it came to speaking with any recent graduates or parents. This required tact and diplomacy and proved that Becky could work under pressure and with no precedent in this area; she had to develop the role using her own initiative.
Becky’s confidence and ability have grown immeasurably since first working with the Employability Department. “

Holly Hunt BA (Hons) English Literature 2nd Year nominated Rachel Cundill the Catering Manager of the Bath YMCA
Holly nominated her employer, Rachel because she maintains an interest in the student’s educational developments, and insists that this takes priority over any work related duties.
Holly stated that
“Rachel has a huge heart for ensuring that the working environment sets the standard for equal opportunities employment and that her staff are encouraged and challenged both in practical skills and personal development. When I initially applied for a vacancy in the YMCA catering team through the Job Shop, I was a shy and quiet person, with little faith and confidence in my own abilities and, truth be told, minimal practical and social skills, despite this, I was given the position, and during the past 18 months or so that I have been employed, I have come on in leaps and bounds. Rachel has assisted me in both developing my skills within the kitchen, and in my approaches to social situations.”
Rachel won the South West Regional heat and finally went on to be awarded the National Runner-Up for Student Employer of the Year 2011.
Rachel commented ‘ I was delighted to be nominated let alone win the SW heat and be National Runner Up for the award. The YMCA puts great emphasis on working with young people and supporting their personal development – Holly’s experience is a great example of YMCA work.’
