GP Referrals

Welcome to the YMCA Health & Fitness GP referral Scheme. The scheme is set up in conjunction with your local GP Practice in order to offer the doctors another avenue in respect of your health.

The benefits of regular exercise have long been recognised in terms of preventing health problems, as well as assisting in curing patients or as part of a rehab programme. For example, we have worked with clients with health issues including:

  • Heart rehabilitation
  • Sports injuries
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Weight loss / gain
  • Muscular & joint problems
  • Depression
  • Low self confidence and self-esteem

If you have never used a health & fitness facility before – don’t worry, that is quite normal. The YMCA has had health and fitness facilities in Bath for over 150 years now, although I am pleased to say they have been vastly improved and updated. We are open 7 days a week and our members are aged from 16 to well into their eighties. We pride ourselves on the excellent staff who all hold qualifications in delivering effective exercise programmes and working with clients on a 1-2-1 basis. Many of our staff also hold other specific qualifications including sports massage, personal training, teach exercise classes etc. Alongside the gym facilities we offer a varied class programme which some clients find work better for them.

How it works

If your doctor or the nurse has put you on the scheme you will be given a GP prescription which is a form they complete and you give to us at your first appointment. All you need to do is phone (or call in) and make an appointment for an initial fitness consultation, stating that you are on the referral scheme. During your consultation you will be asked for your GP prescription and a number of other questions that we ask all new members of our facility. We give you the option to take part in a few minor physical assessments in order for us to gauge your current fitness levels, set targets, and give us something to monitor progress by.

Following this initial consultation the instructor will put together a specific programme to help meet your targets. At the next meeting, you will be taken through the programme and be shown how to use relevant parts of the gym. An instructor will then shadow you for approximately another 4 visits (dependant on your confidence ) until you are comfortable in using the gym on your own – although instructors are always available to help, encourage or adjust your programme as your progress.

Time frame

It is a 12 week programme and allows for 2 visits per week. At the end of the 12 weeks, you and the instructor will evaluate the success of your programme.

What it costs

The cost is £60 for the whole 12 week course, which is paid in two installments: £30.00 at the start of the first week and another £30.00 at the start of week six.
