Hear it from the member’s mouth!

I was introduced to the YMCA gym at nearly 70 years of age via the GP Referral Scheme. The ‘one to one’ relationship with my fitness instructor, who designed a programme to suit my needs, was excellent and he and indeed all staff at the gym provided an enthusiastic experience with a friendly smile. My experience on the GP Referral Scheme was such that at its conclusion I joined the gym and now enjoy regular workouts.

Based on the foregoing I have pleasure in recommending the YMCA Gym to others as a well run, friendly and professional outfit.

I was referred to the YMCA fitness club in Bath under the GP referral scheme, reason being high blood pressure and general fitness.

I retired in June 2009 and in July 09 joined the YMCA gym under the GP Referral Scheme. At first on a 12 week course, having a fitness assessment with my instructor, which I found most enjoyable having a laugh now and then! Since then I have joined on a yearly membership course, having my own personalised fitness programme to follow which is reviewed every 3 months.

I find all of the staff at the YMCA gym most helpful, friendly and very pleasant. You can have a laugh with them all and a little banter now and then all in good fun.

My Blood Pressure has dropped and my fitness levels have improved.

My name is Adrian and I'm 39 years old. During most of my adult life I've been fighting a mostly losing battle to attain a healthy weight. I used to be a fit and active teenager, playing tennis was my passion, at one point I could hand-on-heart tell you that I had played every single day for over a year! When I first attended the University of Bath I almost immediately became captain of the men's tennis team. I was extremely fit and healthy and to be honest I never gave my weight a second thought.

During my second year at Uni, however, a succession of injuries which left me almost immobile and bad lifestyle choices meant that the pounds started piling on. I certainly reacted too late to what was happening, I did not join a gym, I did not start to eat healthily and the situation worsened at an accelerating rate.

When I finally woke up to what was happening I found myself in serious trouble. My weight had ballooned to well over 100kg and I could not walk more than 50 meters without getting out of breath. My joints ached all the time and my feet were a constant source of pain.

During this period of my life I was lucky enough to travel extensively and everywhere I went I joined the local gym. I've been enrolled in gyms in San Francisco, New York, London and Manila - some of the finest (and most expensive) fitness centres in the world with the most technologically advanced equipment.

I'm now a member of the YMCA Health and Fitness Club in Bath. The 'Y' is not like those other gyms. For a start, during the time I was attending the other gyms my weight did not reduce, it actually went up. It increased to a life-threatening level of 152kg. Following my attendance at those other gyms I had become convinced that, being realistic, there was no real hope of my achieving a normal weight again, and, if I'm honest I had in fact given up. If it hadn't been for my girlfriend (now my wife) encouraging me to give it another go... well... who knows? But, as I say, the 'Y' is not like those other gyms.

It starts with the staff. The way they say hello to you when you arrive. They know your name and they look you in the eye and smile. The way that they book you in for your first assessment without making you feel like the assessment is actually some form of judgment on prior misdemeanors. The way that they are an unobtrusive presence, always available to help but not intruding into your workout unless you ask for advice.

Mick and his team are very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. They manage to strike just the right balance between highly-trained-fitness-professional and friend, which makes asking questions, and having confidence in the replies easy.

Then it goes on to the environment. I have to admit that when I thought of joining the YMCA Health and Fitness Club I had misgivings. I thought 'it's a charity, how good can it be' and 'it's probably just an add-on to get people interested in the accommodation'. I find these thoughts laughable now, they could not have been further from the truth. The gym is bright, airy, clean and it's big. The equipment is first-rate and varied and there's plenty of it. The overall feeling is of a professional outfit run for the members, whatever stage of fitness that may be at. There's a great range of cardio machines, resistance machines, free weights and stretching areas. Chilled water is always available to maintain hydration and the fridge is stocked with a variety of sports drinks and fitness shakes and bars.

Finally, the other members, and this is where the 'Y' differs most markedly from the other gyms I've been to. There is an almost palpable camaraderie about the place. I've lost count of the number of times another member has approached me and said "You're doing really well" or "You can really see the difference - keep it up!" Everyone is striving toward a similar goal and they are doing so in a friendly way. In other gyms I have noticed an air of competition exists. People feeling that they have to constantly push to lift the heavier weight, do the most reps. I've never noticed that at the 'Y'.

When I joined my weight was 152kg. Today it is 102kg. One third of me has disappeared. I still have some way to go but I no longer have any doubt whatsoever that I'll make it. I feel fantastic and I look forward to getting up in the morning and starting my day with my friends at the 'Y' which as I have said, really, is not like other gyms.
