International Links - Working with Belarus and Madrid YMCA...

Belarus is slightly larger than Ireland and has a population of over 10 million, over 1 ½ million live in the capital Minsk, which is some 2 ¾ hours from London by Belavia the National Airline.
In 1986 a reactor at Chernobyl Nuclear Plant exploded, 12 kms south of the Belarussian border. Some 70% of radiation fall-out fell on Belarussian land. Gamma radiation exceeded natural value by 25 times in Minsk, and 1,500 times on the town of Bragin, 23% of the country was heavily contaminated and still is. It is expected some 40% of children exposed to the radiation will develop thyroid cancer over the next 30 years.
In 1996 Bath YMCA visited Lida, Belarus to create links with the YMCA there. The Lida YMCA was being run (as all the Belarussian YMCA’s) from an apartment. This visit was a result of a talk on the Chernobyl meltdown given at the Bath YMCA.
Bath YMCA have close links with Belarus and we help fund the National Office in Lida, plus the Lida YMCA. The activities are run by dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers.
