Bath Day Nurseries / Day Nurseries in Bath - The City of Bath YMCA Day Nursery...

The YMCA nursery provides full and part time day care for children aged 18 months to 5 years. We operate 51 weeks of the year, from 8.30am until 5.30pm for 51 weeks of the year (we close between Christmas and New Year).
Our aim is to provide high quality childcare in an environment that recognises every child as unique and to cater for their individual needs. Our experienced and qualified staff are central to the success of our nursery. Staff work closely with parents and carers to provide the quality of care that your child requires.
Within our nursery we help children to experience and learn a variety of skills appropriate to their stage of development. Activities are designed to be play centred and take place in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We want our nursery to be a home from home environment where your child will feel at ease and among friends and people who care about them. This helps promote self confidence, independence and a positive outlook which are important qualities for going on into school and later life.
As well as benefiting from a dedicated outside play area with a variety of equipment and games, the YMCA also has a large dance studio adjacent to the nursery where the children have dedicated access for free play. A range of large and small equipment is available and helps develop their physical skills whilst using up some energy! This is a wonderful space, especially during bad weather when outside play can be restricted.
All children are provided with a mid morning snack and milk, a two course lunch (vegetarian option always available) and an mid afternoon snack. All food is prepared in our on-site kitchens and special diets can be catered for.
The nursery is registered and inspected by the Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED). The most recent report is available to view here. We pride ourselves on being small enough to feel welcoming so that all children know one another and all the staff, but large enough to offer variety and stimulation. For this reason, we are registered for 26 children per session.
For our young children we follow the Birth to Three Matters framework, which is a government initiative to support children in their earliest years. Our daily activities for our youngest children are therefore based on the four different aspects of this framework as follows:
A Strong Child
This is linked to your child’s social and emotional development and is all about building confidence, self assurance and the enjoyment of playing with others.
A skilful Communicator
Learning to talk and communicate is an important skill for the young to master. We encourage the importance of listening and responding to others as well as looking at ways to actively promote language through stories, rhymes and song for example.
A Competent Learner
Very young children are curious and ready to explore world. We know from research that actively moving and exploring helps the development of the brain. This aspect of learning looks at how the very young understand and respond to their world.
A Healthy Child
We want to develop the ‘whole child’, with food, safety and hygiene included. This aspect of learning is also about making sure that children are emotionally secure and learning to make decisions.
From the age of approximately 3 we provide a pre-school education, particularly during your child’s final year before starting school. This takes place in our special pre-school area within the nursery. With two qualified primary teachers on the staff team, we have structured an excellent programme centred around the Early Learning Goals for the Foundation Stage initiated by the School Curriculum and Assessment Authority (SCAA). Six areas of learning are included:
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Learning how to work, play and co-operate with others, including personal, social, moral and spiritual development.
Communication, Language and Literacy
Developing competence in talking and listening and providing a foundation for reading and writing.
Mathematics
Providing a foundation for numeracy and learning about different aspects of mathematical understanding.
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
Developing an understanding of the children’s own environment, other people, the natural and made world.
Physical Development
Providing opportunities for children to develop physical control, mobility, awareness of space and manipulative skills
Creative Development
Developing imagination as ideas and feelings are expressed in creative ways.
